My View from the Front Porch: Founder's Breakfast

Founder's Breakfast

Anybody who knows me (Jay) knows that I love holidays. The Christmas Season is my favorite six months of the year. So I was very excited for today, which was the first ever, fourth annual, Spare Key Founding Breakfast Day.

Any group or community that exists for long enough will eventually start to create its own traditions and important days. Well, four years ago today, a group of intrepid community pioneers met at a breakfast cafe to talk about what intentional community in Springfield Missouri might look like. Spare Key Intentional Community grew out of that conversation.

Today, four years later, some of us met at Springfield Brewing Company to celebrate intentional community and to continue that conversation which started four years ago.

Dinner Club

The question that motivates Spare Key is: In what ways would our lives be better together than they would be separately? That question has led us to experiment with space sharing, shared cell phone plans, community supported agriculture shares, collective service projects, purchasing appliances together, and on and on.

We want to expand our adventures in neighborhood sharing beyond the group of folks who are currently in the habit of meeting.  So we are figuring out the details of what we are calling... dinner club!

Rob will write another post soon on this topic, stay tuned for that. But the idea is: You host a dinner for the group--whether quarterly, or monthly, etc, depending on how many people get involved--and hosting one dinner gets you a ticket to participate in many subsequent dinners free of charge. Dinners will be cheap, and simple, and filling. Dinner club will be an improvement upon our current fun but complicated potluck system. Dinner club will make it easier for newcomers to get involved, too!

Four More Years! Four More Years!

We had a fun time today eating breakfast at BruCo and then drinking Founder's Breakfast Stout on the back porch and dreaming about what the next four years will look like. Stay tuned, everyone! And thanks for your continued support.
